Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced today an odd-even license plate system for people to purchase gasoline and diesel in areas affected by Superstorm Sandy, Gannett’s Haley Viccaro reports.
The emergency order will reduce lines and wait times at gas stations in New York City’s five boroughs. According to a news release, the system will begin at 6 a.m. on Friday and remain in effect until further notice to aid in increasing the supply of gasoline.
“Last week’s storm hit the fuel network hard – and knocked out critical infrastructure needed to distribute gasoline,” Bloomberg said in a statement. “Even as the region’s petroleum infrastructure slowly returns to normal, the gasoline supply remains a real problem for thousands of New Yorkers.”
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that Nassau and Suffolk Counties would also be implementing the emergency order for fuel purchasing. Westchester, Rockland and Orange Counties will not be following the odd-even license plate system, he said.
“Due to additional fuel supply disruptions caused by the Nor’Easter which hit the region last night, Nassau and Suffolk Counties and the City of New York have decided to implement temporary fuel management measures to reduce lines at retail gasoline stations,” Cuomo said in a statement.
The odd-even license plate system will allow individuals that have plates ending in an even number or the number “0” to purchase gasoline on even numbered days. Plates ending in an odd number can make purchases on odd numbered days.
Vehicle plates that end in a letter or other character can also make purchases on odd numbered days. Vehicles that are exempt from the system include commercial, emergency, bus, paratransit and Medical Doctor (MD) vehicles.
The fuel system also doesn’t apply for filling fuel cans or gas cans. People who do not comply with the emergency order can face a Class B misdemeanor charge.
