The Westchester Board of Acquisition and Contract approved an emergency contract Thursday to fix the roof of the Technology Building, which was damaged Oct. 29 when Hurricane Sandy toppled a tree that landed on the building.
The contract for $375,000 is with Milcon Construction Corp, which was on campus already working on the roof of the Student Center Building. In the memo asking for the approval, college President Joseph Hankin said he feared if the roof was not fixed quickly the computers and servers in the building would be damaged or destroyed.
At the request of Hankin, the contract was let without soliciting quotes from other vendors. Milcon is a certified contractor for the roof system used on the Technology Building, he said.
“Due to the seriousness of the damage, the impending forecasted storm, and the fact that Milcon is currently providing satisfactory roofing services to WCC and has provided satisfactory roofing services in the past, the most prudent course of action is to have Milcon provide a new roofing system to the Technology Building Roof and to not engage any contractors fro the emergency contractors list,” he wrote.
