Romney Carried 26 NY Counties, Two Fewer Than McCain

Republican Mitt Romney won 26 counties in New York on Election Day, two fewer than Republican John McCain in 2008.

The tally from the Associated Press reviewed by Gannett’s Albany Bureau shows that President Obama won three counties on Tuesday that he lost four years ago: the largest being Staten Island. McCain won Staten Island with 52 percent of the vote in 2008; Obama narrowly won with 50 percent Tuesday.

Madison and Warren counties also flipped to Obama on Tuesday. Chautauqua County, which narrowly went for Obama in 2008, sided with Romney this time.

As in 2008, Obama won big in New York overall: 63 percent to 26 percent. In 2008, Obama won 62 percent to 37 percent. The state has twice as many Democrats than Republicans.

Generally, the same counties that sided with McCain went with Romney too — mainly small rural counties in the Southern Tier, North Country or Finger Lakes.

Here’s the full list, with the counties in bold that choose Romney over Obama.

  1. Ssmart New Yrkrs on

New Yorkers voted to NOT set the country back 50 years if Romney was elected.

The GOP has been shellacked and had better offer better than lies, ancient ideas, disdain, denial, racist slogans (ie “taking back our country”) and divisive signs appearing on utility poles in Mt Pleasant reading DONT BELIEVE THE LIBERAL MEDIA if they hope to matter in the future.

  2. just the facts on

you know what is very interesting .within days of the election major conservative commentators
who had backed romney and predicted a republican win CHANGED THEIR POSITIONS on
    1. immigration sean hannity said his position had evolved and he now favored a path
to citizenship 2. raising taxes on the wealthies taxpayers william krystal said he couldn’t
understand why republicans wanted to fall on their swords to protect millionaires who vote
democrat any way….bottom line is you guys got misleading information all through the campaign
from the right wing talking heads like limbaugh and hannity levin, rove and ingram…it was
in their financial interests to lead you astray that is what FOX pays them for because this is
roger ailes great idea of how to control elections and insure tht conservative ideology wins..but
guess what there is nothing conservative about what tea party acolytes advocate…its not
conservative to start wars to nation build..and its not conservative to have the government dictate how you should behave in your bedroom…there is nothing consservative about the
spending that george w bush and the republican congress of his time engaged in two wars
and a drug bill not paid for and there is nothing conservative about vouchering medicare
simply put the republican party has become driven by a bunch of readical reactionaries who
rely on the dumbed down middle of the nation to follow them of the cliff….

  3. It’s not that I love Democrats. They can be venal, stupid and ineffective. But the ultra Conservatives who have taken over the Republican party, dumping Dick Lugar and chasing out Olympia Snowe are frightful absolutists, who could easily bring in an American Dictatorship. That’s why many of us held our noses and voted for Obama.

  4. The only problem with many Republicans is that they are actually Democrats. Obama won because 47% of Americans pay no federal taxes whatsoever and like it that way. Add 4% Rhino Republicans who feel the same way, and you got your 51% and that’s that.
