Post-Thanksgiving Count Expected in Undecided Saland Race

Dutchess County elections officials have indicated they may wait until after Thanksgiving to begin the recount in the contested Senate race in the Hudson Valley between Sen. Stephen Saland, R-Poughkeepsie, and Democrat Terry Gipson.

Gipson holds a roughly 1,600-vote lead, and there are more than 7,000 absentee ballots to be counted.

In an email obtained by Gannett’s Albany Bureau, Republican elections commissioner Erik J. Haight told his Democratic counterpart, Frances Knapp, that the counting will likely start Monday, Nov. 26.

“Based on counsel availability, we would start counting the 40th on the 20th and start in the 41st on the 26th.  The 19th CLD being part of the 41st would be part of that count,” Haight wrote. The 41st District is the Gipson-Saland race. The 40th is a seat won by Sen. Greg Ball; his Democratic opponent Justin Wagner conceded today.

Democrats told the Times Union today that Republicans are stalling to keep the Senate majority picture cloudy. As it stands, each side as 31 votes, with two races — Saland-Gipson and Republican George Amedore versus Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk undecided. Tkaczyk has a 139-vote lead.

  1. Saland lost this election because of his breaking his promise on his vote about same sex marriage. He has only himself to blame.

  2. “As it stands, each side [h]as 31 votes, with two races—Saland-Gipson and Republican George Amedore versus Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk undecided.”

Incorrect. This statement could only be true if there were 64 Senate seats.

Right now, the Republicans–including turncoat Democratic Sen. Simcha Felder, who recently announced that he would caucus with the Republicans–have 31 Senate seats. The Democrats have 30. Two races remain undecided.

  3. Jane – No matter who wins or who loses, there is marriage equality (I guess one could argue you and your fans lose no matter what). When Di Carlo’s children come of age they will have only shame in their last name. Long will be long forgotten within a year. The conservative party will join him within a decade. Saland is bigger than this election, because he knows the right thing is bigger than any individual. Conservatives are fools. One issue blindness has given the reigns of NY government to NYC democrats. NOM can declare victory if exiling your party into the wilderness is a version of victory. Fools.

Signed – A former Republican (RINO?!?) who, like others, has been turned off by social facists. Thank you for killing the GOP.
