Democrat Leader Says Blame Republicans, Not Cuomo, If Senate Stays With GOP

Sen. Michael Gianaris, the head of the Senate Democratic campaign committee, said Gov. Andrew Cuomo is not to blame if Democrats can’t take control of the Senate in January.

[1]MSNBC host Chris Hayes and a writer for Salon [2] knocked the Democratic governor for not doing more to help Democrats retake the majority.

Asked on Capitol Pressroom about whether Cuomo might be to blame, Gianaris said:

“No, certainly not. I would blame the Senate Republicans for purposefully trying to create chaos and overturn the will of the voters. The Senate Democrats had a very successful Election Day – wildly successful, more so than anyone could have thought because the people of this state want a Democratic Senate.”

Democrats appear to have won 32 seats on Election Day. But Brooklyn Democrat Simcha Felder said last week he’s joining the Republican conference, and two seats are still undecided and are headed to recounts.

Gianaris, a Queens Democrat, blamed Republicans for the 2009 Senate coup—when two Democrats joined the Republican conference for a month and led to gridlock in Albany before the two Democrats rejoined the Democratic conference.

“This is the Republican Senate playbook. This is what they did four years ago,” Gianaris said.

“If you compare one to the other, the strategy is very clear. They create chaos, they appeal to misguided Democrats, and they transact with them.”
