Latest Timeline for Academics’ Fracking Review? Dec. 3

The panel of academics who will be assessing the health-related portions of the state’s hydrofracking review have now been told their work should be completed by Dec. 3, according to one of the experts.

Lynn Goldman, dean of George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services, said in an email today that the academics’ work now must be completed by early December. Last week, state officials had signaled a completion date of “mid-February at the latest.” [1]

“There are two different dates,” Goldman wrote today. “The review completion date is indeed December 3 but my agreement with them is through mid February.”

Goldman told The Associated Press yesterday [2] that she hadn’t seen the state’s health review yet.

Goldman and other medical professionals from the University of California Los Angeles and the Colorado School of Public Health have been contracted by the state to assess its review of hydrofracking [3], specifically how it relates to public health.

Kate Sinding, a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said a Dec. 3 deadline would not leave enough time for a comprehensive review.

“Given that we’ve got the Thanksgiving holiday this week, that seems like an extraordinarily short time frame,” Sinding said. “To the extent that it suggests that what they’re reviewing is not very voluminous, that’s troubling.”
