Cuomo: “I Don’t Get Hung Up On Politics”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he’s staying clear of the fight for control of the state Senate, saying he wants to focus on governing.

“I’ve been here two years,” Cuomo told reporters today in Rome. “I think if anything we’ve proven that we can work with just about anybody and any political configuration. I don’t get hung up on politics.”

Cuomo said during his two years in office, he has shown an ability to get bi-partisan support. Republicans control the state Senate, but with two undecided races, it’s unclear whether they still will in January.

Cuomo’s comments came as the Independent Democratic Conference said it wants to form its own permanent conference in the Senate. The group’s leader, Sen. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, told Gannett’s Albany Bureau today they wouldn’t support either a Republican or Democrat for Senate leader.

Cuomo said he was unaware of Klein’s comments on the subject in the New York Times.

“Let them do their politics, I’m not interested in it. I’m interested in the policies that move the state forward,” Cuomo said.

As for the fiscal cliff in Washington, Cuomo said the public wants to see government functioning.

“Let’s compromise, let’s come together and let’s move the country forward,” Cuomo said, “and that’s what I think should happen and I believe will happen.”
