New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says a $50 billion supplemental budget request would be ”inadequate,’’ responding to a report by the New York Times that’s the amount the administration is preparing to ask Congress for in an emergency spending bill to help repair the damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.

New York and New Jersey are requesting $79 billion in federal emergency aid. Connecticut is requesting another $3.2 billion.

Gillibrand spoke to reporters briefly in a hallway as she left a Senate hearing on Superstorm Sandy.

“I think that is inadequate,’’ Gillibrand said. “It will not cover the cost to rebuild New York. And we will fight for more funds if that is the number. I do not think that is an adequate number, however.’‘
