Former Sen. Vincent Leibell, a Putnam County Republican who was sentenced to jail time on tax evasion and grand-jury obstruction charges, has been transferred to home confinement.

Leibell’s sentence on his guilty plea to two federal corruption charges is due to end Jan. 19.

A woman at Leibell’s house on Cushman Road in Patterson said he was “unavailable” when a reporter approached the sprawling white farmhouse late Monday afternoon.

Signs are posted on the driveway saying “no trespassing” and warning that written authorization is required to go onto the property.

Chris Burke of the federal Bureau of Prisons said Leibell moved to home confinement on Dec. 4. “Technically, he is still an inmate until Jan. 19,” Burke said.

It is unclear whether he will be required to wear an ankle monitor.

Burke said restrictions vary on a case-by-case basis and he would not comment on that.
