Cuomo: Federal Gun Reform Needed

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday said the issue of gun control is “fundamentally a federal matter” because firearms can easily be transported across state lines.

Cuomo, a Democrat, has called for a crackdown on guns following Friday’s massacre in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

While acknowledging New York and other states can take steps to bolster their gun laws, Cuomo said the most “effective, efficient” way to deal with the issue is at the federal level.

“Right now, our laws are some of the toughest in the nations but in some ways it’s to no avail because people can buy a gun somewhere else and drive it in,” Cuomo said. “So a federal law would make the most dramatic effect.”

Cuomo said officials first have to look at better defining assault weapons. New York has a ban on such firearms, but it includes various exemptions and loopholes.

There was a federal ban on assault weapons passed in 1994, but it expired in 2004.

“I think much more needs to be done on ‘assault weapons’ … starting with how do you define an assault weapon,” Cuomo said. “That, I think, is going to be the first step.”

Aside from that, Cuomo did not mention any other specific state laws he thinks need to be changed, but said his office will soon be unveiling formal proposals.

  1. Simple. No automatic or semi-automatic weapons allowed outside of a licensed, secure facility. There is no excuse for these weapons of mass murder to be in public space. Go play with them in your gun club or firing range, with proper regulation and oversight. You can only keep hunting rifles or single shot handguns at home. That’s what was covered by the Second Amendment.

    Enough is enough.

  2. “All We Are Saying Is Give Gun Control a Chance”

The late and great John Lennon, the victim of an assassins bullet in front of the Dakota was singing to me today and it sounded like this, “All we are saying is give ‘Gun Control’ a chance … Yah everybody, All we are saying is give ‘Gun Control’ a chance…” If there is a heaven and I believe there is, I hope the victims of the Newtown’s slaughter are close to Mr. Lennon and can find comfort in his company. It’s clear now that many of the children slaughtered there, had a last view of life that was a ‘Gun’ barrel at close range staring them in the face; before their brains were blow all over the room. As ghastly as that image is I’m also horrified by the needless images that await us if we fail to seize upon every possibility to stop gun violence in America that legislation affords us.

Senator Charles Schumer counseled the left today on the fact that a 2nd Amendment exists in our country. Did anyone forget that a 2nd Amendment exists in our Country? We just want to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t own them in the first place. The regulated distribution of fire arms in America clearly needs to be refined and licensing requirements to own and keep fire arms need to be toughened. The ribald right has no trouble toughening voter registration laws, so let’s encourage them to be just as open minded about gun control laws.
