Calling him a “close friend and colleague,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo remembered former Westchester County Executive Andrew O’Rourke for his “deep intellect, self-deprecating humor, and unwavering integrity.”

O’Rourke died on Thursday at the age of 79 after a lengthy illness.

“We will miss Andy’s vigor and passion for serving the public, as well as his humor which had the power to gracefully disarm political opponents as well as ease the tension of a heated debate in the courtroom,” Cuomo said in a statement. Despite our political differences, my family and I have always considered Andy a close friend and colleague, and he will be dearly missed.

O’Rourke, a Republican, served as Westchester executive from 1983 to 1997.

Cuomo’s full statement is after the jump.

“Today we mourn the loss of Andy O’Rourke, who served New Yorkers and the residents of Westchester and the Hudson Valley throughout a long and dignified career in public service, both as a county executive and a judge. Andy always put his deep intellect, self-deprecating humor, and unwavering integrity toward serving the people of New York.

“We will miss Andy’s vigor and passion for serving the public, as well as his humor which had the power to gracefully disarm political opponents as well as ease the tension of a heated debate in the courtroom. Despite our political differences, my family and I have always considered Andy a close friend and colleague, and he will be dearly missed. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I send my condolences to Andy’s family and friends.”

Andy O’Rourke was truly a wonderful individual. He was kind to all and his brand of political acumen was what all our elected officials should aspire to be. May this man, my friend, Rest in Peace.

No one who worked in county govt misses this liar and illegal contract guy who wore out his welcome and then got a plum do nothing judge spot.

i can’t believe you would leave a comment of this nature on the announcement of the death
of a former county executive who through his even tempered demeaner and compassionate
approach to government set a standard that should be emulated by every elected official
across the nation. Andy was a gentleman and a gentle man….he will be missed by anyone
who knew him regardless of party affiliation or ideology

Ditto, consultant. We seem to have at least one wacko here who, posting like a kindergarten roach, offers profane venom under various pseudonyms.

  5. Not just one wacko. Thus blog is crawling with wackos filled with venom. You can’t be conservative enough.
