State GOP: Cuomo Abusing Constitution to “Build A National Resume”

The state Republican Party is knocking Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the quick vote on new gun-control laws, saying he’s doing it to build his national profile.

[1]Cuomo, a potential presidential candidate in 2016, shepherded through the Legislature the toughest gun-control laws in the country on Monday. He did it through a message of necessity, which allows him to avoid the three-day waiting period for newly introduced bills to be considered.

“For Governor Cuomo to state that the 20-year gun control debate justifies limited debate over the specifics of the SAFE Act is intellectually dishonest and downright absurd,” the state party said in a statement.

“For example, a gun registration law in Canada that turned millions of law-abiding citizens into criminals resulted in such massive resistance that Canada had to rescind the law. Could that happen in New York? Never discussed.”

The party said Cuomo has used message of necessities on some of his top initiatives, such as same-sex marriage, a new pension tier, teacher evaluations and a DNA database.

“The way Mr. Cuomo is governing in Albany should raise serious concerns among New Yorkers who cherish the democratic process—even among those who agree with the governor on the issues,” state GOP Chairman Ed Cox said in the statement.

Cuomo today pointed out that he’s used messages of necessity less than his predecessors. NYPIRG reported that Cuomo used 34 messages during his first two years in office—less than any other governor over the past decade.

Cuomo also noted that the Legislature could have rebuked his bill, but voted for it. A dozen Senate Republicans, mainly from Long Island, backed the bill—including Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County.

“More discussion on gun control? I’ve been working on this for 20 years,” Cuomo said.
