Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, R-Melrose, Rensselaer County, apologized in a statement and video this afternoon after he made comments this morning that Hitler and Mussolini would be proud of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s hasty passage of the gun-control law last month.

McLaughlin said he called Cuomo to apologize.

“He did not deserve that,” McLaughlin said. “Just like you, I’m human. I make mistakes sometimes.”

In his statement and video, McLaughlin said he was trying to make the point [1] that bills should not be rushed through the Legislature.

“In politics, too often people are unwilling to admit their mistakes. Today, in the heat of the moment, I let my passion overcome me and made an insensitive remark that has overshadowed a serious matter regarding democracy in New York State,” McLaughlin said in the statement. “I used a poor analogy and have called Governor Cuomo to apologize.”
