Here is the announcement:
Campaign Finance Reform in New York State will be the topic of a public discussion on Wednesday, March 13, 7 to 9 pm at the White Plains Public Library, 100 Martine Ave. Sponsors are the League of Women Voters of Westchester County, LWV of White Plains, LWV of New Rochelle and the White Plains Public Library.
Discussion leaders will be Laura Ladd Bierman, executive director of the League of Women Voters of New York State, and Barbara Bartoletti, legislative director of the LWVNYS. They will begin with a slide presentation showing the effects of unlimited campaign contributions, sometimes without disclosing the donors. Then they will call for comments and questions.
“Many qualified citizens do not run for office because they don’t have big donors backing them,” said Madeline Zevon, president of the LWV of White Plains. “We lose the very core of democracy if only those with big money run for office.” The LWV of New York State supports lower contribution limits, increased disclosure, and a system of small donor matching funds.
