Stewart-Cousins faults Con Ed over Sandy response

State Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, is faulting Con Edison for a lack of communication with ratepayers, elected officials and its own employees in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
In testimony submitted Monday to the Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Moreland Commission on Utility Storm Preparation and Response, Stewart-Cousins also urged the utility company to “rethink its priorities” about serving vulnerable populations such as senior citizens and the disabled in Westchester County.
“Hurricane Sandy was an extraordinary event, and we are all cognizant of the magnitude of the damage and the significant pressure that Con Edison faced at the time,” she said in her comments.
“However, given the recent abundance of extraordinary weather events over the last few years, it seems more and more likely that such an event will happen again,” she continued. “That is why it is so important for this commission to meticulously investigate what went wrong, what went right and how we can do better the next time.”
