Westchester legislators urge stronger gun control in unanimous vote

The Westchester County Board of Legislators passed a resolution Monday night urging the federal government to consider a long list of measures to prevent gun violence and keep firearms out of the hands of potentially dangerous people, while emphasizing that they gun ownership is a constitutional right.

The vote was 16-0 with Legislator Virginia Perez, D-Yonkers, absent.

The list of measures include mandating universal background checks on all gun sales, increasing penalties for violent crimes using guns, ensuring information from mental health providers on people who might be a danger to themselves or others makes it to the National Insta Check System, increasing federal funding for community mental health programs and banning “automatic military-style assault weapons.”

The resolution will be sent to the president and congressional leaders.
