Three Democrats and all Assembly Republicans voted yesterday against increasing the minimum wage to $9 an hour. With Democrats holding 107 seats in the 150-seat chamber, the measure easily passed 102-44.
The three Democrats to break ranks were Assemblymen William Magee of the Syracuse area and Buffalo-area Assemblymen Dennis Gabryszak and Robin Schimminger.
The Assembly spent more than three hours debating the issue into the evening, with Assembly Republicans railing against the proposal. Business groups also knocked the measure, which now heads to the Senate.
It’s unclear whether the Senate will act on it. Democrats want it done, but Republicans—who share control—have balked at the bill.
