No community immune to gun violence, Cuomo says

No one would have expected Wednesday morning’s shootings in central New York — but firearms attacks can happen anywhere, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at an early evening press conference in Herkimer.

“Herkimer and Mohawk — these are the types of peaceful, quiet communities that one would say, well, this could never happen here,” Cuomo said. “This is one of those things that you just couldn’t imagine.

“It’s just another example that there is no community that is beyond the scope of senseless gun violence,” Cuomo continued, “and unfortunately, we see this more and more and more.”

Cuomo, who has been a central figure in the controversial fight for gun-control laws, called the shooting a “senseless horror.” Four people were killed, and two others were injured, when a gunman opened fire in a Mohawk barber shop and Herkimer car wash.

Police are in a standoff with suspect Kurt Myers, 64, of Mohawk, who is believed to be barricading himself in an abandoned building on Herkimer’s Main Street.

“This is truly an inexplicable situation,” Cuomo said at the news conference. “There was no apparent raional motive, to the best of our knowledge at this time, to provoke these attacks.”

The governor said the his thoughts and prayers and with the families of the victims.

“I would like to say that this is a situation that we can resolve quickly. Unfortunately, it’s not,” he said. “It’s going to take a long, long time to come to grips with what has happened and to make sense and find peace.”

  1. “…scope of senseless gun violence,”

Obviously they’re not beyond the reach of stupid cops who don’t know how to mount their expensive red-dot sights. The EOTECH red-dot on the M4 is mounted backwards. If citizens know more about these weapons, but shouldn’t be allowed to own these weapons, then judging from this picture, neither should the police who don’t know their a55 from a whole in the wall.
