Read complaint: Another state lawmaker charged in separate bribery scandal

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara wasn’t kidding Tuesday when it feels like it’s “Groundhog Day.”

Bharara announced today that Assemblyman Eric Stevenson, D-Bronx, was charged with federal corruption charges and four other defendants. It comes two days after Sen. Malcolm Smith, D-Queens, was charged in a separate, massive bribery scandal.

Stevenson is accused of taking bribes, in upwards of $5,000 in exchange for official acts, “which included drafting, proposing, and agreeing to enact legislation that would benefit the co-defendants’ businesses.” It is in regards to a Con Edison contract that Stevenson was expected to help with.

Remarkably, two defendants are charged in connection with their payment of a bribe to another assemblyman, who is not named. The complaint says that the unnamed assemblyman is actually cooperating with prosecutors, and as part of the agreement will resign today.

“The charges include conspiracy to deprive New York State and its citizens of Eric Stevenson’s honest services, federal programs and Travel Act bribery conspiracy, federal programs bribery, and Travel Act bribery conspiracy,” Bharara said in a statement announcing a news conference today at noon in Manhattan.
