Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, said Assemblyman Eric Stevenson should resign after he was arrested today in a bribery scandal.
“Assemblyman Stevenson’s alleged actions as outlined by the federal charges against him are a clear violation of the public trust and cannot be tolerated,” Silver said in a brief statement. “I believe that given the evidence that has been presented, he should seriously consider whether he can continue to maintain the public trust. I am encouraging him to resign.”
Silver says nothing about another assemblyman who is expected to do just that: Assemblyman Nelson Castro, D-Bronx. Castro has agreed to resign after he was also caught up in the bribery scheme and went witness.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara wouldn’t identify Castro at the news conference, but media reports said it’s Castro.
