Lauren Shields, a teenager from Rockland County who survived a heart transplant in 2009 and inspired Lauren’s Law, was honored yesterday in the state Senate for her work to encourage organ donation.
Last year, Sen. David Carlucci, D-Clarkstown, Rockland County, worked with Lauren to get the law passed after it failed in 2011.
Lauren’s Law requires driver’s license applicants over the age of 18 to answer whether they would like to join the state’s donor list. Currently, the applicants aren’t required to answer the question.
Carlucci praised Lauren’s work yesterday during the start of the Senate session at the Capitol.
