Prosecutors: Fellow state senator encouraged Huntley to take bribe

Could more charges against a sitting New York lawmaker be on the way? A document filed in Brooklyn federal court Friday seems to suggest so.

huntleyphotoIn a sentencing memorandum for former Sen. Shirley Huntley, the U.S. Attorney’s office said an unnamed state senator encouraged Huntley to take a bribe in March last year from a businessman who was looking to expand at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens.

The prosecutors said Huntley accepted $1,000 from the businessman and tried to help him obtain additional space. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the airport, ultimately did not lease the extra space to the businessman.

In June of 2012 — after Huntley was hit with separate fraud charges — she agreed to secretly record conversations with seven elected officials and two others, including the unnamed state senator. The U.S. Attorney’s filing says evidence against the senator and two other elected officials will be unveiled in a letter next week.
