IG pummels NY’s boxing gloves rules

The state Inspector General’s Office said in an investigation today that the state Athletic Commission didn’t have up-to-date rules requiring approval of boxing gloves for sanctioned fights and needed to clarify some of its guidelines.

The Athletic Commission has since done, so, said IG Catherine Leahy Scott.

“The rules are confusing, ambiguous, and insufficiently publicized,” she said in a statement. “I am pleased to announce that as a result of my office’s investigation and recommendations, the New York State Athletic Commission has agreed to clarify and publicize these standards and take significant steps to ensure they are applied with consistency.”

The improvement comes as proponents of mixed-martial arts want to legalize it in New York. If approved, the fights would be overseen by the Athletic Commission.

After losing a May 2012 match to Josh Williams, boxer Bryant Pappas alleged that Williams used illegal gloves. The complaints were unfounded, the IG’s office said, but it did lead it to ask the commission to improve its regulations.
