In a last effort to get an abortion-rights bill to the Senate and to fend off criticism, the Independent Democratic Conference is calling on fellow senators to sign a petition that they would support the measure if it comes to the floor.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo essentially knocked the petition as a stunt, but IDC spokesman Eric Soufer said it’s a legitimate effort to try to garner the 32 votes necessary to get the bill on the floor.
“This is a good faith effort to determine those senators who support the bill, and who are, in fact, pro-choice,” Soufer said.
The IDC contends that there are simply not the 32 votes needed to pass the bill, even though the four IDC members support it. Democrats and women’s groups are saying the IDC should push for a vote, regardless of whether the votes are there.
