Fresh off setting the record for international goals by a soccer player, Monroe County native Abby Wambach has a new product to pitch: New York apples.
Wambach, who surpassed Mia Hamm’s record of 158 goals last month, will appear in a series of advertisements for the New York Apple Association to promote the state’s new crop. The “Abby for Apples” ad campaign will include television, radio, print and online spots, and will launch in the fall, according to the association.
“Being a New York native, I am excited to join the New York Apple Association to create more awareness that the best apples in the world come from New York orchards,” Wambach said in a statement.
Wambach is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and has been named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year five times. She currently plays for the Rochester-based Western New York Flash of the National Women’s Soccer League.
“New York soccer moms and players love Abby, and with her local roots and healthy, active lifestyle she is a fantastic apple ambassador for us,” New York Apple Association President Jim Allen said in a statement. “New York state apples, Abby and soccer, that’s just using our heads.”
