A Republican assemblyman is pushing for an independent investigation of sexual harassment in the Legislature.
Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor, R-Fishkill, Dutchess County, wrote a letter to the his chamber’s ethics committee Friday pushing for a firm without ties to lawmakers to investigate sexual harassment claims.
Allegations against Assemblyman Micah Kellner, D-Manhattan, in recent weeks followed the high-profile charges against now-resigned Assemblyman Vito Lopez, D-Brooklyn. Assembly leadership has been criticized for its handling of both cases.
“As I am sure you are aware, 58 percent of New Yorkers would not send their daughters to work in the state legislature,” Lalor wrote in a letter to Assemblyman Charles Lavine, D-Nassau County, who chairs the ethics committee. “We have to fix this problem. Two independent, pro bono law firms, chosen by different parties, will help achieve this goal.”
