Democratic Rep. Sean Maloney of Cold Spring made history a year ago by becoming one of the few openly gay members of Congress.
A letter to Santa by his younger daughter Essie pushed Maloney and his longtime partner Randy Florke to make history in another way by getting engaged on Christmas Day.
The only other gay member of Congress who is married is freshman Rep. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, who was married in Canada.
Maloney and Florke have been together for 21 years and have three adopted children – Jesus, who is in his 20s and no longer lives at home, and two school age girls, Daley and Essie.
Essie’s letter to Santa last month – which was handwritten on the congressman’s stationery — asked for some Legos, two nerf guns and caps.
She also wrote, “Santa can you try making my wonder-ful fathers get married, they are a loving couple.
“Love, Essie Maloney Florke
“P.S. If I was not good, try only my father.’’
Maloney and Florke publicly announced the engagement Monday night. Here’s their joint statement:
“After 21 years together, we are excited for the next step in our journey as a family. For decades, we’ve fought to ensure that all families can experience the joys of loving commitment and we are proud to have our friends and family share this special moment with us in the near future.”
No date for the wedding has been announced.
