Astorino to Trump: “This circus stuff has got to come to an end”

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino today urged celebrity billionaire Donald Trump to either run for governor or step aside, saying the focus should be on Gov. Andrew Cuomo and not an Republican Party battle.

The comments come as Astorino could announce as early as next week his intentions to seek the GOP nod to run against the Democratic governor.

“If Donald Trump wants to run, then run,” Astorino told reporters in Albany. “Nothing is stopping him. Just like whether he runs or not won’t stop me. I think a primary could be helpful. But what he shouldn’t be doing is firing at us and not at the governor.”

Astorino added: “This circus stuff has got to come to an end, and he’s got just say if he’s running or not.”

Trump has been critical of Astorino, saying the two-term executive has no chance against Cuomo. But despite calls from some Republican leaders that he run, Trump hasn’t committed to the race and has said he would only run if there is no GOP opponent.

On Twitter today, Trump wrote: “Internal polling shows that I would swamp @RobAstorino in a NY Republican primary 77% to 23%. But won’t run if party is not unified.”

Astorino laughed off Trump’s claims.

“That’s funny because our poll has it 98%-2% in favor of us,” Astorino said.

Astorino contended that potential donors do not think Trump is serious about a gubernatorial run. Trump in the past has contemplated runs for governor and president and never entered the races.

“Everyone we talked to in New York City or around the state doesn’t take him seriously, quite frankly,” Astorino continued. “And their support of me would be whether he’s running or not.”

Michael Caputo, a Republican political operative who has led the effort to recruit Trump, said Astorino was opening the door for Trump to criticize his political failings.

While he said Astorino would “make a great governor,” Caputo said the Westchester executive has no shot at defeating Cuomo in November and should allow Trump to run unopposed. Trump supporters have said Trump has enough support to easily win the GOP nomination at its convention in May.

“Nobody knew going into this that the ego that would be a problem is Rob Astorino’s,” Caputo said on WBEN-AM in Buffalo.

Astorino continued to be critical of Cuomo, particularly over the decision of Remington Arms to open a plant in Alabama and not in New York. The company, which has a major facility in the Mohawk Valley, made the decision in part because of New York’s gun-control laws, local leaders said. The Alabama plant will employ up to 2,000 people, the company said.

“Alabama is laughing at us and that in and of itself is not funny,” Astorino said.

  3. Clown Astorino has completed term CE and has no track record of accomplishment-only fiscal mismanagement and corruption. He used the savings of employees who retired under a NYS incentive plan to phony up an image of small tax increases and to hire a staff of campaign workers at taxpayer expense. His borrowing to avoid tax increases also led to a Moody’s downgraded credit rating for Westchester. He could have used savings from retiring employees under the NYS incentive plan to reduce Westchester taxes by up to 20% in 2011 but hired crony campaign workers instead for his run for Governor?? RIDICULOUS! The civil service employees who do the real work for the County despise Astorino and his bunch of cronies.

Annie sorry the county laid you off but in the end if you own real estate you should be happy he’s put on lid on county taxes. It a start at least & he doesn’t claim the county’s broke so we can’t do this or that.

What’s Cuomo done for us in the last 4 years? And are you going to complain about Cuomo not managing the state when he runs for President as you do about Astorino running for gov?

So friends, there’s your daily Republican talking points for Thursday Feb 20 from the ever-predictable North of the Hutch.

    Never a Republican he doesn’t love…never a Democrat he doesn’t diss

  7. North of the Hutch on

If that’s all you got, then its game set match for North!

Still reeling from the trouncing Bramon got huh? The sting will go away in time for the taxing season so I’m sure you’ll be ready to take at a moments notice.

I just love it when the Democrats try to divery our attention away from our crushing tax burden with …… really nothing but insults. Great game plan.

  8. South of the Facts on

Hutchie remains south of the facts.
Facts: The County’s credit rating outlook was downgraded under Astorino’s watch. The bridges around the county have deteriorated into disrepair under Astorino’s watch. Astorino has hired dozens of political cronies, many of them unqualified for their jobs (and now working on his campaign.) And Astorino vetoed the two percent tax decrease in 2011. Astorino is the one trying divert voters from the facts.

  9. North of the Hutch on

South, but where would we be if Rob Astorino hadn’t beat Andy Spano? Answer: Bond rating would be lower than it is today.

And who exactly did you think he would hire? A bunch of Brammy’s friends or Spano’s friends? No he’s going the hire the best people he knows. And that 2% decrease was a shame budget that didn’t address anything. BTW, if it was that great why didn’t your people over ride his veto? You had the super-majority & could have.

Sorry you’re BS is flying here. Keep it coming though, I’ll forward it to Noam, maybe he can use some of it to fill the potholes in New Ro.

  10. North of the Hutch on

Hey South, can you work in Sen George Latimer somehow so we can bring him up too? He’s really not doing much for us sitting with the minority party. We deserve so much better.

  11. Oh sure North. Probably related to or one of the hacks on County of Westchester payroll sucking up for Astorino who gave you your do nothing “job” with no real citizen supporting responsibilities.

  12. South of the Facts on

Hey Hutchie–Legislators did overturn Astorino’s veto with the super-majority. That’s why the county taxpayers got the 2 percent decrease that Astorino keeps taking credit for–duh! Better check your brainpan for a leak.

  13. Horth of the Nutch on

Hey North…what exactly are you doing for your GOPaycheck?

Paid flack that’s all you are

  14. North is another New Ro Neurotic. They go apoplectic over everything. Oh yes… And they don’t win elections.

Their big victory was Bramson losing to Astorino. Lets see how good they feel when Cuomo demolishes him.
