Mike Spano on his ethics-reform law01.22.10

Assemblyman Mike Spano, D-Yonkers, issued a release today on an ethics-reform law he co-authored.

“Tales of political corruption and deceit have crowded the airwaves and newspapers in recent months, eroding the public’s hard-earned trust and underscoring the need for swift and decisive action. Now more than ever, with a state looking to its elected leaders for answers, it’s imperative that we restore that faith and forge a relationship based on disclosure and accountability.

“That’s why I co-authored sweeping ethics reform legislation (A.9544), which passed the Assembly this week, that will step up government transparency and oversight, and cut down on the influence of lobbyists – taking Albany back to its democratic roots. Legislators should not be indebted to special interests groups, and this bill will get us back in line with our mission statement: better serving the people, not high-powered lobbyists.

“It’s unfortunate that Governor Paterson plans to veto what will surely prove an important and long-overdue step in our efforts to not only regain the public’s confidence, but get New York back on the road to recovery. However, I’m hopeful that the overwhelming support the measure’s received in both houses will override any dissension.”

Mike Spano says budget season requires creativity01.19.10

Assemblyman Mike Spano, D-Yonkers, issued a statement this afternoon on Gov. David Paterson’s proposed 2010-11 budget. Here’s Spano’s view:

“The governor unveiled his proposed budget today for the upcoming 2010-
2011 fiscal year, a reminder that this year’s financial plan will require elected
officials to think creatively, responsibly and with great forethought. It is imperative
that we create substantial and reoccurring cuts to the budget in order to bring the
government in line with what the New York State taxpayers can afford while
protecting essential services our communities need. We are at the precipice of
history, staring down one of the most difficult economic times, loaded with obstacles
and challenges. But I am ready for the task.”
